Sports events and initiatives play a significant role in our society, from small, local-level activities to large-scale international competitions. However, they also exert pressure on the environment. The City, Green, GO! project members have worked hard during the recent year with professionals, universities, cities and many others to create a toolkit that empowers you to address environmental challenges.

Create a meaningful impact

The potential of urban physical activity and grassroots sports providers (local authorities, sports and environmental organisations, schools and companies) to help the climate, is not just about reducing the carbon emission of the initiatives and events. It is also about promoting climate awareness and action among the member of the local community.

« All clubs and organisations that adopt eco-friendly behaviour bring the whole community on board, it’s about using sport to get the whole of society moving to fight against global warming »

To achieve this goal, the toolkit provides practical tips and ideas to help you prioritize eco-friendly practices.

What’s in this eco-friendly toolkit?

We’ve designed the toolkit to empower you with practical knowledge related to forms of eco-friendly grassroots sports in urban settings, and  to help you convince your leaders to take action and to raise awareness among those around you. There are 3 complementary entry points:

  • Why should we promote eco-friendly grassroots sport initiatives in urban settings?
  • What can eco-friendly grassroots sport initiatives bring to society, what are the direct benefits?
  • Explaining why sport is the perfect tool to make the public more aware

“At grassroots level, sport can often be the perfect tool to engage with communities, providing a much-needed hook to capture the interest of sports fans and get them thinking about sustainability.” Directorate-General for Climate Action (European Climate Pact).
